Mission Commander Briefing

Agents, you have spent the day investigating phenomena, asking questions, developing models, and constructing explanations. Your final mission is to connect the pieces.

Mission Control has cleared access to the Science Workshop Model lessons. Your team will explore the grade-level units, identify structures that could work in your classroom, and determine how the workshop model supports students as scientists.

Mission Success Criteria

By the end of this mission, I can:

  • ☐ Identify structures in the lessons that support 3D science instruction.
  • ☐ Explore grade-level units and protocols available on the CCSD Science website.
  • ☐ Determine one instructional move I can use in my classroom.
  • ☐ Reflect on how the Science Matters missions connect to daily science instruction.

Mission Directive 02: Explore the Units

Grade-Level Exploration Protocol

With your CCC Team, select one grade-level unit or lesson sequence from the Science Workshop Model page. Use the protocol below to guide your exploration.

1. Scan the Unit

What is the phenomenon or learning context? What are students trying to figure out?

2. Look for 3D Learning

Where do students engage in science practices, use crosscutting concepts, and develop core ideas?

3. Identify the Workshop Structure

Where do you see launch, investigation, sensemaking, discussion, reflection, or application?

4. Consider Classroom Fit

What could work well in your classroom? What would need to be adapted?

Where does the lesson create a reason for students to wonder, investigate, and explain?
