Cobb Tank is modeled off the popular TV show, “Shark Tank,” where eager contestants pitch their idea to a panel of “sharks” in hopes of being awarded funding for their project. Last year boasted 100 teacher/team applications with nine being awarded funding for innovative projects totaling over $83,000! Example winners include Hendricks Elementary School's Reading Nook, Cooper Middle School's Power in the Palm of their Hands and Kennesaw Mountain High School's Moving the Planets and Stars into the Classroom. Apply at http://cobbtank.weebly.com/ Donald Samull Classroom Herb Garden Grant- Deadline to Appy: October 1st The Herb Society of America offers these grants to teachers of grades 3-6 classes of at least 15 students. Ten schools will receive $200 "seed money" grants to establish indoor or outdoor herb gardens. Funds may be used for soil, plant trays, containers or tools. Apply at http://bit.ly/MpoSsc Target Field Trip Grants- Deadline to Apply: October 1st Target grants of up to $700 for K-12 schools; Field trips should connect students' classroom curricula to out-of-school experiences and take place between January and the end of the school year. Apply here http://bit.ly/1M8lzai Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education Grant Program- Deadline to Apply: October 15th This program offers grants of between $100 to $500 for environmental stewardship projects that focus on native plants and cultivate students' appreciation for nature. Funds may be used to purchase native plants and seeds. Apply here http://bit.ly/1JSgWwc SaveOnEnergy Grants- Deadline to Apply: October 21st These $500 grants go to teachers with the best lesson plans for helping K-8 students learn about energy or sustainability. Grant money can be used to buy materials to implement the lesson. Apply at http://bit.ly/29Zvf9i Inspired by the Cobb KiDtalk competition, the Georgia Science Teachers Association (GSTA) is sponsoring a STEM Talk competition. Wheeler’s Ishan Chadha was the high school winner for the state last year. This year GSTA is asking students to share how “STEM is shaping their future”. Winners will be recognized at the 3rd annual Georgia STEM Forum in October in Athens. If all team slots are full on 10/1/2016, there will not be a late registration time. The GA Science Olympiad Registration Fee for 2017 is $195.00 per team. Teams consist of 15 students. A school is limited to only 2 teams for the 2017 season. 1 team cost = $195; 2 team cost = $390 First Timers! If your school is participating in Science Olympiad for the very first time or if your school has not participated in the past 5 years, you qualify for a special first/returning registration rate of $95 for your one team. If you are a First Timer/Returning school and want to register a 2nd team, you will pay full price for the 2nd team registration.
